New Year challenges

Well here we are January of 2010. The opportunities are endless. A clean slate to start fresh. Many people start their New Year making resolutions. I do this every year. Maybe resolutions are not the exact word that applies in my case. I try to think of things that I want to do, nothing though that will make me feel terrible about myself if for some reason I am unable to acheive it. I really don't like that feeling. This year I noticed that Holly had made a list of resolutions. She wrote the title on a piece of paper and listed off her resolutions. She hasn't told a single person about this list. I just happened to see it one day when I was putting her laundry away. I took a look at it. She lists goals that she would like to acheive and things that she wants to do to improve herself. ( In my opinion she is pretty great the way she is.) I decided to just kind of watch her in daily life and see if she was working on anything on her list. Well I can honestly say that she has been working towards everything on her list. She is very committed it would seem. I love to see this. One of the things she wants to do is get an A in math. She is a very bright student and loves school. Math is not her best subject. This week her Tuesday folder came home and I was really shocked. She had several math papers with very low scores. This is not normal for her at all. I noticed the problem right away. She is very confused about long division. I showed this to the teacher and she is having her make up the work, thank goodness. With this though has come a couple days of me trying to teach her long division! Finally I got through to her. Hmm I was feeling pretty good about it until I had her work some problems with zeros. She was crossing them off and telling me she was karate chopping them. I had NO idea what she was talking about. Thankfully her teacher is a friend of mine so I contacted her and she gave me the 411 on the whole karate chop thing and I was able to help her. It all must be working because she got an A on her math test today! Yay for Holly. She tried and tried and tried and her perserverance paid off. I am very proud of her. She still has mentioned nothing about her resolutions but that is OK. They are hers to make and keep.

I have been busy around the house so far this year. I am getting a lot of things done which makes me happy. I think that it is very important to do what makes you happy. We all only have one life to live and we need to spend it doing what makes us feel good. I have many hopes for this upcoming year. Whatever the year has in store for me I will look forward to. I hope that everyone has a wonderful 2010!
